The Side Effects of Antidepressants

Antidepressants are drugs that the world uses for the treatment and hopeful cure of depression. They often treat major depressive disorder, clinical depression, and persistent depressive disorder. They are also used for a wide variety of mental illnesses such as anxiety, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), chronic pain, and in some cases attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Treatment regarding antidepressants depends on the case and severity of the mental illness.

You may be wondering what are the side effects of antidepressants? This is very important when considering your next move to cure your depression. 

Unfortunately, it is becoming clearer that antidepressants have many people worried as side effects are definitely evident through clinical research and personal experiences. As with all medication and drugs, people react differently. There is not one drug that contains no set of side effects. However, antidepressants have proven to contain side effects that can be rather severe.

Everyone’s brain chemistry is different and those who are on antidepressants will react differently to them than others will. That is how medication and brain chemistry works. Many chemical reactions and mechanisms that differ from person to person. Present health conditions, genetics, and the environment also all play a role in how you may respond to antidepressants.

As helpful as antidepressants may seem in curing depression, the side effects can actually be very depressing themselves.

There is not one antidepressant that has been proven to be more useful and effective than others. This is why some doctors prescribe antidepressants solely on the side effects that may come with the specific medication.

The reason why antidepressants may come with so many side effects is because it is extremely difficult to understand how antidepressants and depression affect the brain.

Furthermore, antidepressants may take a while to start working. This time period could range from 2 weeks to months depending on if you find the right fit the first go-around. If you don’t, then you may find yourself experiencing the depression you have as well as the side effects coming from the trial and error of your antidepressant medication. This is not good and needs addressing. 

I like to stress natural remedies before hopping onto antidepressants. Everyone should at least give natural remedies a try such as exercise, healthy dieting, natural supplementation, and counseling before solely relying on antidepressants. What are the side effects of antidepressants?

Coping With Antidepressants

I do not want to bash antidepressants here. They are among the most prescribed medication in the world. They evidently work once you find the right fit, but at least for me, the negatives outweigh the positives. People may find themselves very depressed with suicidal thoughts and the last thing you want to do is jump on antidepressants and feel worse. 

If you are not on antidepressants and are considering it, please talk to your doctor. Discuss exactly how you are feeling. Do not make this a one-time conversation lasting 5 minutes. Make your doctor understand. Discuss alternatives. Discuss what you have tried so far and what has worked for you in the past. Try talking to other people who have tried antidepressants or are currently on them. Get their opinion. This is so important. If your doctor seems to be completely for antidepressants without considering your feelings or personal situation, then talk to another doctor.

Another problem of antidepressants is that it is essentially a money grab. This is a multi-million dollar industry and doctors and psychiatrists may be completely for antidepressants without considering any alternative.

If you are on antidepressants, then I strongly urge you to check with your doctor before going off of them. If you find your antidepressants have been working, then abruptly going off them may also give you side effects.

I understand that depression is dark. It is a terrible disease. You feel isolated and completely alone. You feel like there is no light ahead and that there is no purpose to life. You may feel hopelessness, guilt, and worthlessness. But this is not the end. It is okay to not be okay. Understand this. There is always hope and always a light at the end of the tunnel. 

If you are feeling this way, then you may think that the only solution is to go on antidepressants and hopefully find your miracle pill. Unfortunately, you may feel worse than better. Again, I would like to stress alternatives. You owe yourself to try to cure your depression naturally before jumping on antidepressants.

I’ve never took antidepressants but the urge was there. I thought once too this was the only solution. But it was one I truly did not want to take part of.   1. I agree totally with you on this. The natural way is the best way for everything to me. It drives me crazy when I hear this medication will do this and that but if you notice your arm fall off discontinue use. You get the gist of what I am saying. The body is designed to molecularly fix itself. We just teach it how to depend on medicines and I think that is most peoples problems.

Obviously, some are meant to receive medication in their mental health situation. Everyone is different, but everyone should try natural remedies. Really give it a good try before jumping on medication.

  2. I personally took antidepressants once. I started with them the very first time it just made me more anxious and didn’t helped a lot. Between depression and anxiety, I can’t tell which one might be worst for taking it.

    Very interesting article. I myself have been having depressions on and off through my life and only once did I take antidepressants. It only lasted for a month since it felt like a membrane was pulled over my brain, so I started to look for more natural ways with supplements.

    What I found is that most depression is caused by a silent inflammation and I was lucky that I stumbled upon some product’s that changed my life.
    By getting my Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acid’s in a balance of 3:1 I have been getting rid of most of the more or less chronic pains, depression, anxiety and my overall wellbeing has improved.

  4. I have used Antidepressant twice in my life and both times for about a year. They definitely have their place in society but are handed out too frequently by doctors in my opinion.

    Since all those years ago, I have overcome my severe anxiety disorder with nutrition, meditation, exercise and natural supplements.

    When you in the thick of it, you’ll give anything ago and natural remedies are normally the last on the list, But they should be tried first!

    • I agree Vince. They are handed out too frequently and easily. Before giving out them, doctors and psychiatrists should really administer an in-depth conversation about the patient’s situation. Glad you have overcome your anxiety through natural remedies. We all should try natural alternatives opposed to medication first.
